Is a cylinder service the appointment you need?

An unvented cylinder stores hot water under pressure. It is a separate appliance from the boiler that may heat it, and it has its own controls, expansion arrangements and safety devices. Some cylinders are heated directly by immersion heaters; others use a boiler or another heat source.

If your system is working and due routine maintenance, ask for a cylinder service. If you have no hot water, a leak, unusual discharge or a control fault, tell us before booking: an existing problem may need diagnosis and a repair quotation. We discuss any recommended additional work and its cost before proceeding.

What does an unvented cylinder service cover?

The correct checks depend on the make, model and installation. We follow the manufacturer’s service instructions rather than applying the same procedure to every cylinder. The service can include:

  • Inspecting accessible connections, the cylinder and associated components for signs of leakage or deterioration.
  • Checking the temperature controls and safety controls appropriate to the model.
  • Checking the pressure-relief arrangements, tundish and discharge route in accordance with the appliance instructions.
  • Assessing the expansion provision, whether the system uses an internal air space or an external expansion vessel.
  • Inspecting serviceable strainers and components, with cleaning or maintenance as specified by the manufacturer.
  • Recording the service findings and explaining any further attention the system needs.

A routine service is not a promise to resolve an existing fault or replace every worn component for the service price. Describe any symptoms when you enquire so we can agree the right visit and explain the charges.

How often should an unvented cylinder be serviced?

Follow your appliance manual and warranty conditions. Annual maintenance is recommended for many unvented cylinders. For example, Heatrae Sadia recommends twelve-monthly maintenance by a competent person. The exact work depends on the cylinder, its condition and the manufacturer’s instructions.

Keep the service record with the appliance paperwork. Regular maintenance helps identify issues with controls, expansion and safety components; it does not replace fault investigation when something changes between visits.

Cylinder service, boiler service or CP12?

These are different appointments. A cylinder service covers the hot-water storage system. A boiler service covers the boiler, while a landlord gas safety check (CP12) concerns the relevant gas appliances and flues. Booking one does not automatically include the others.

If you would like a boiler and cylinder serviced during the same visit, list both appliances in your enquiry. We confirm the scope and combined quotation before booking. Our £120 boiler-service-and-CP12 package is a separate option; it does not include a cylinder service.

Information that helps us prepare

  • Your postcode and the cylinder make and model from its data label.
  • Whether it is heated by a boiler, immersion heaters or another heat source.
  • When it was last serviced and whether the service record is available.
  • Any leaks, loss of hot water, unusual sounds or water visible through the tundish.
  • Access restrictions around the cylinder or controls.

A photograph of the label and a wider picture of the cylinder can help us understand the installation. Do not remove covers or disturb controls to take a photograph.

Common questions before booking

Does servicing the boiler also service the cylinder?

No. They have different components and maintenance requirements. Tell us if you need both so the visit is arranged correctly.

Can you service a Megaflo or a cylinder with an expansion vessel?

Send us the make and model. Different cylinders manage expansion differently, so we confirm the model-specific work before booking. G3-qualified engineers carry out the unvented-system service.

What if water is running through the tundish?

Report this as a fault rather than waiting for the next routine service. Do not block a discharge pipe or adjust safety valves. Follow the appliance’s user instructions and contact a suitably qualified engineer for advice.
