If your boiler pressure keeps dropping, it is easy to feel stuck between ignoring it and worrying that something serious is wrong. The honest answer is: sometimes it is a simple top-up issue, and sometimes it is a sign that the heating system needs proper attention.
This guide explains what boiler pressure is, why it can fall, what you can safely check yourself, and when it is time to call a Gas Safe registered engineer.
What boiler pressure actually means
Boiler pressure is the pressure of the water inside your central heating system. On most modern boilers, you will see it on a dial or digital display. When the system is cold, many boilers sit somewhere around the middle of the gauge, often near 1 bar, but the correct range can vary by boiler.
Pressure will usually rise a little when the heating is on because the water expands as it warms. That is normal. What is not normal is having to top the pressure up again and again.
Common reasons boiler pressure drops
1. A small leak somewhere in the heating system
The most common reason for repeated pressure loss is a leak. It does not always mean water pouring through the ceiling. It could be a tiny weep from a radiator valve, a pipe joint, the boiler itself, or hidden pipework under floors.
Walk around your radiators and look for damp patches, greenish staining, rust marks, or swollen flooring nearby. If you spot anything obvious, do not keep topping the boiler up and hoping it goes away. A small leak usually gets worse.
2. Air has been bled from radiators
If you have recently bled your radiators, the boiler pressure may drop afterwards. That can be completely normal, because releasing trapped air changes the pressure in the system.
In that case, topping the pressure back up once may be all that is needed. But if it drops again over the next few days, there is probably another cause.
3. A problem with the expansion vessel
The expansion vessel helps manage pressure changes as the heating water warms up and cools down. If it is not working properly, pressure can rise too high when the heating is on and then drop again afterwards.
A clue is the pressure climbing quickly when the heating is running, then falling low once everything cools. This is not a DIY job. It needs checking by a competent heating engineer.
4. The pressure relief valve has discharged
Boilers have safety components designed to release pressure if it gets too high. If the pressure relief valve has opened, you may see water dripping from the small copper pipe outside.
Once this has happened, the valve may not reseal perfectly, which can keep causing pressure loss. Again, this is one to have inspected rather than repeatedly refilling the system.
What you can safely check yourself
- Check the boiler display or pressure gauge when the system is cold.
- Look around radiators, visible pipework and valves for damp, staining or corrosion.
- Think about whether you have recently bled radiators or had heating work done.
- Look outside for water dripping from the boiler discharge pipe.
- Check your boiler manual for the recommended pressure range before topping up.
If you are confident using the filling loop and your boiler manual explains it clearly, you may be able to top the pressure up carefully. But do not over-pressurise the boiler, and do not keep doing it every week. Repeated topping up is a symptom, not a fix.
When to call an engineer
You should get the boiler checked if the pressure keeps dropping after topping up, if you can see signs of a leak, if the pressure rises and falls dramatically, or if the boiler is showing fault codes.
It is also worth booking help if you simply are not sure. A proper inspection can often save time, prevent water damage, and stop a small issue turning into an expensive one.
